Sport for Life and SPARC Alberta Summit:
Proceedings Report

Sport, physical activity, and recreation are essential to our well-being. Children and youth more than ever need our support, and innovation to ensure that they have the life skills and experiences to be successful, thriving members of our communities.

Alberta is a leader in so many ways and youth sport is no exception. Working alongside our partner, Sport for Life, we were thrilled to host the first Youth Grassroots Sport Summit this past May.

We heard from over 150 SPAR leaders across Alberta during facilitated conversations, through webinars and workshops, and other online engagement such as surveys and e-learning feedback. We are delighted to share the feedback and learnings we have gathered through our summit proceedings report "Imagining New Futures For Community Grassroots Sport In Alberta".

SPARC Calls to Action

The SPARC Alberta Calls to action are a summary of the feedback received throughout the various discussions and engagements held throughout the past two years.
The proposed Calls to Action provide some ideas about how we might reimagine community-based grassroots sport.

3 out of 4 youth (5-17 years of age) are active in sport, however, participation rates have shown to peak at 10 to 13 years of age then dramatically decrease by age 16, especially in girls (True Sport, 2019).

1 in 3 girls (16 - 18 years of age) drop out of sport (compared to just 1 in 10 16-18 year old boys) (Canadian Women in Sport, 2020).

Only 1/3 (37.2%) of youth aged 12 - 17 met the Canadian physical activity recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with 50.8% of youth before the pandemic (Statistics Canada, 2020).
